There are ostriches in Paraguay! Actually, they are a "rhea". The Spanish name is avestuz, and in the Guarani language, they are called ñandu'a. We see them everywhere - sometimes mixed in with the livestock - other times just out in the wild.

There are a lot of water birds, since much of the country is low and swampy. Here are two of the storks that we commonly see on the highway.

Some of the local wildlife is not easy to photograph "in the wild". So - road kill is sometimes the only way to see them! Here we have a 7 foot long "false water cobra" (non-poisonous) and an ant-eater.
We keep our camera handy - so - we will try to keep this page updated as we come across interesting animals.
